Thailand QR Payment Indians: Pay Like a Local — Which Apps Work and What to Know

Thailand QR payment Indians want to use is coming — but the TAT "Pay Like a Local" initiative currently serves China, Singapore, Malaysia, and other East Asian markets, with UPI integration in progress but not yet operational at merchant level.

Thailand QR payment Indians can use in 2026 is finally becoming a reality — but the picture is more nuanced than it first appears. Thailand’s “Pay Like a Local” cross-border QR payment initiative, highlighted by the Tourism Authority of Thailand in June 2026, is primarily designed for visitors from China, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, South Korea, Lao PDR, Cambodia, and Hong Kong who use Alipay, WeChat Pay, or UnionPay.

The Thailand QR payment Indians need to understand is this: a bilateral NPCI-Thailand agreement on UPI integration has been signed and Thailand is listed as a target market by NPCI International — but as of mid-2026, UPI acceptance at Thai merchants is not yet operational at scale.

India is not on the current active list of “Pay Like a Local” participating markets. The practical advice for Indian travelers remains: carry Thai Baht and a zero-forex international card. This article explains what the initiative actually covers, what is coming for Indian travelers, and how to pay in Thailand right now.

What the “Pay Like a Local” Initiative Is

The Tourism Authority of Thailand, under the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, launched the “Pay Like a Local” Cross-Border QR Payment initiative to connect Thailand’s merchant network with the digital payment systems used by international visitors — removing the friction of cash dependency for tourists from QR-dominant markets.

The initiative is advanced by the Bank of Thailand in collaboration with eight participating banks — Krungthai Bank, Bangkok Bank, Kasikornbank, Siam Commercial Bank, Bank of Ayudhya, ICBC Thai, Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives, and CIMB Thai Bank — together with payment and switching partners National ITMX, Alipay, WeChat Pay, and UnionPay.

TAT is promoting QR payment convenience at attractions, shops, restaurants, and tourism establishments nationwide through international marketing and publicity channels, particularly in East Asia.

Mrs. Sirigesanong Trirattanasongpol, TAT Executive Director of the East Asia Region, said: “Changing traveller behaviour, particularly among visitors from East Asia and neighbouring markets where mobile payment and QR Payment are widely used in daily life, makes Cross-Border QR Payment increasingly important to the visitor experience. This cooperation marks another important step in advancing Thailand’s tourism industry, creating business opportunities for operators, and reinforcing the country’s image as a modern global destination for digital travellers from around the world.”

Which Countries Can Already Use QR Payment in Thailand

The Thailand QR payment Indians want to understand begins with knowing who the system currently serves.

Pay Like a Local is currently available to users from China, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Viet Nam, South Korea, Lao PDR, Cambodia, and Hong Kong. Travelers from these markets can use their home banking apps or e-wallets to scan PromptPay QR codes at participating Thai merchants — paying in their home currency with automatic conversion to Thai Baht.

For Chinese travelers using Alipay and WeChat Pay, this system is already deeply embedded in daily Thailand travel. The QR code at a Bangkok street food vendor, a Chatuchak Weekend Market stall, or a convenience store in Chiang Mai can be scanned directly from a Chinese wallet without needing to carry Baht.

For Singaporean travelers using PayNow, Malaysian travelers using DuitNow, and Vietnamese travelers using VietQR — the same frictionless QR scan experience is now available across Thailand’s tourism network.

India is not yet on the active list. The NPCI-Thailand agreement exists, and UPI integration is a stated target — but as of mid-2026, Indian UPI apps are not operationally connected to Thailand’s PromptPay QR network in any meaningful merchant-ready way.

Why Indian UPI Is Not Yet in Thailand’s System

The Thailand QR payment Indians are waiting for comes down to timing and technical integration — not policy intent.

As of 2026, UPI is accepted in Singapore, UAE, Nepal, Bhutan, Mauritius, France, and Thailand — with expansions underway to Indonesia and the UK. However, “accepted” in NPCI communications means the bilateral agreement is in place — it does not mean every Thai merchant QR code will work with your PhonePe or Google Pay app today.

The reality from traveler experiences is more cautious. Malaysia signed a UPI integration agreement in February 2026. Indians were excited. But as of today, it is not actually working. If you are planning a Malaysia trip, pack your forex card. By late 2026 or 2027, UPI might be a real option. Right now, it is just press releases.

The same honest framing applies to Thailand. The NPCI-Thailand partnership is real. The policy architecture exists. But the merchant-level QR code implementation — where your PhonePe or Google Pay successfully scans a Thai QR code, converts, and settles — is not yet the standard experience Indian travelers encounter in Bangkok, Phuket, or Chiang Mai.

The most significant practical risk is the OTP dependency. UPI sends OTPs to your Indian mobile number. If you are using a local Thai SIM card without international roaming on your Indian number, OTPs won’t arrive and UPI transactions will fail at the counter.

How to Actually Pay in Thailand in 2026 — The Practical Guide

Given the current state of Thailand QR payment Indians face, here is what actually works right now:

Thai Baht cash — still essential. Carry adequate Thai Baht at all times. Street food vendors, local markets, small restaurants, temple entry, tuk-tuks, taxis, and any small merchant will only accept cash. Exchange at currency exchange counters at Suvarnabhumi Airport’s basement level or at SuperRich, Vasu, or other authorised exchangers in Bangkok for the best rates.

Zero-forex international debit or credit card. Cards like HDFC Diners Club, Axis Atlas, SBI Prime, Niyo Global, or IDFC First Wow! work on Visa and Mastercard networks at most mid-range and larger merchants, hotels, and restaurants across Thailand with no foreign transaction fee. Contactless tap works widely in Bangkok’s malls, hotels, and chain restaurants.

Grab app with a saved international card. Grab accepts your Visa or Mastercard credit card saved in the app — the most convenient cashless transport payment in Thailand.

RuPay cards at some locations. RuPay international cards are accepted at some outlets in Thailand — but coverage is inconsistent and should not be relied upon as a primary payment method.

The Merchant Activation Roadshow: Building Thailand’s Network for All

The TAT “Pay Like a Local” initiative is actively expanding Thailand’s merchant QR payment network through on-the-ground activation events.

A Merchant Activation Roadshow was held at Asiatique The Riverfront Destination in Bangkok, between Warehouses 8 and 9. The event engaged shops, restaurants, and tourism operators in preparing to accept QR payments. Participating merchants could learn about the system, consult with partner banks, and register for QR merchant services on-site.

The Bangkok activation followed a pilot in Udon Thani on March 31, 2026, which prepared local operators for an expected rise in Chinese visitors. The Udon Thani pilot included a seminar for 52 operators at Monthathip Hall Convention Centre and a mobile outreach unit supporting small businesses along Thong Yai Road and at UD Town.

This ground-level merchant activation is the critical piece. A QR payment system only works when merchants actually display and maintain QR codes. TAT and the Bank of Thailand are building that network — and as the Indian UPI integration matures technically, a larger and more merchant-ready QR network will be waiting to receive it.

What Indian Travelers Should Watch for in Late 2026 and 2027

The Thailand QR payment Indians will eventually benefit from is coming — the timeline is the question.

NPCI International has confirmed UPI integration with Thailand’s PromptPay as a priority expansion. If technical implementation proceeds at the pace seen in Singapore and France — where UPI went from agreement to some merchant-level acceptance within a year — Indian travelers visiting Thailand in late 2026 or 2027 may find UPI starting to work at select participating merchants.

Watch for announcements from NPCI International, BHIM, and your specific banking app on whether Thailand QR payments have been enabled. When UPI does go live in Thailand, ensure your Indian mobile number has active roaming before scanning any Thai QR code — OTP delivery to your Indian number is essential for the transaction to complete.

Until then: carry Baht, carry your zero-forex card, and keep your Indian SIM active with roaming for OTP delivery. For travel insurance covering Thailand trips, SafetyWing Nomad Insurance provides comprehensive coverage at affordable daily rates for Indian travelers.

FAQs — Thailand QR Payment Indians 2026

Q: Can Indian travelers use UPI or PhonePe in Thailand?

As of mid-2026, UPI acceptance at Thai merchants is not yet operational at scale for Indian travelers. As of 2026, UPI is accepted in Thailand at the bilateral agreement level — meaning the NPCI-Thailand integration is underway — but the merchant-level QR connection between Indian UPI apps and Thailand’s PromptPay network is not yet the standard travel experience. The practical advice is to carry Thai Baht and a zero-forex international Visa or Mastercard. Monitor NPCI International and your banking app for Thailand UPI activation announcements in late 2026 or 2027.

Q: Which countries’ travelers can currently use QR payment in Thailand?

Thailand’s “Pay Like a Local” Cross-Border QR Payment system is currently operational for travelers from China (Alipay, WeChat Pay, UnionPay), Singapore (PayNow), Malaysia (DuitNow), Indonesia (QRIS), Vietnam (VietQR), South Korea (KakaoPay), Lao PDR, Cambodia, and Hong Kong. These travelers can scan Thai PromptPay QR codes using their home country banking apps and pay in their home currency with automatic conversion. India is not yet on the active operational list.

Q: What is the best way for Indians to pay in Thailand in 2026?

Cash Thai Baht remains essential for street food, local markets, temples, tuk-tuks, and small merchants. For larger purchases, mid-range and upscale hotels, chain restaurants, and malls — use a zero-forex international Visa or Mastercard debit or credit card (HDFC Diners, Axis Atlas, Niyo Global, IDFC Wow!, or similar). Grab rides can be paid by saved international card in the app. Exchange currency at authorised money changers in Bangkok rather than airport counters for best rates.

Final Word

The Thailand QR payment Indians are eventually going to benefit from is in progress — the bilateral agreement exists, the merchant network TAT is building through Pay Like a Local roadshows is expanding, and NPCI International has confirmed Thailand as a priority UPI expansion market. But mid-2026 is not yet the moment of arrival.

Carry Baht. Use your zero-forex card. Keep your Indian SIM active with roaming. And watch for the UPI-Thailand activation announcement — when it arrives, the merchant network will be significantly more ready than it was when earlier UPI markets launched.
